The government has said that drinks containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre will be illegal to sell to under-16s in shops, restaurants, cafes, vending machines and online.

Tea, coffee and lower-caffeine soft drinks, such as Diet Coke, will not be affected. Drinks including Red Bull, Monster, Relentless and Prime will breach the limit.

The BBC has reported that around 100,000 children in England consume energy drinks every day, and that some popular energy drinks brands contain more caffeine than two cups of coffee or four cans of cola.

The new laws are intended to reduce obesity levels in young people, as well as to reduce related issues such as disrupted sleep, increased anxiety, lack of concentration and poor school results.

The ban, subject to parliamentary approval, will be enforced by local authorities. Businesses that break the law could face fines of up to £2,500.
