Guernsey’s Education President Paul Montague says his committee is continuing work started by the previoius government to introduce hot meals to the island’s primay schools before 2030. Currently, none of its 12 mainstream primary schools offers hot meals to pupils.
Montague has said that options were being considered by him and the committee, including offering children from lower-income households free meals. He said colleagues have visited Jersey, where hot school meals have been successfully introduced in recent years.
Hot school meals became available in Jersey schools in 2024, with meals consisting of a balanced main course and a dessert costing just £2.50. For families requiring financial assistance, meals are offered free of charge to eligible children.
