A new study is underway to determine if a specialised liquid nutrition programme could help patients with Crohn’s disease and other inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) recover better from surgery.
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is undertaking the clinical trial, which is called the OCEaN Study, and is working with the University of Birmingham.
The liquid diet being trialled is known as Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (EEN). The trial is being delivered by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, and it is hoped the study will determine whether EEN can reduce complications from surgery and improve outcomes.
One patient who has been involved in the trial said:
“What my experience shows is that there is hope for people living with Crohn’s. Research and treatments are developing all the time, and outcomes are improving for people in ways that help change lives.”
